The swallows are back

We arrived in the evening of 8th May which was of course VE Day and thus a holiday in France. There was no traffic on the motorway at all so we arrived just after 19h. Everything was fine in the house and we unpacked and did some sorting out before having a later supper.

On Saturday morning there was a brief drizzle and then the weather turned dry and very warm. After popping over to the bakers, who is still in business thnakfully, we went off to the market in Cluny and bought some provisions. It was very busy as there was also the Pony Games taking place. We stopped to watch and it was very impressive. It seems as though the riders are in teams and undertake different speed and agility races. It was pretty fast and furious.

We then went off to Le Pain sur la Table for lunch which was good but not excellent this time. After lunch we went home and by then the sun was out and we sat in the garden reading and doing a few garden chores inbetween. I am very pleased that the geranium I overwintered seems to be very healthy. Jules went into the walled garden to spray the brambles which are taking over. I don't really like using chemicals but sometimes it is a necessary evil to reclaim the garden. When he came back he said that he had seen a snake - I assume either a grass snake on an adder. Think he was a bit shocked. After a bit of research we think (hope) it was a grass snake.

In the evening we went for a stroll around the village in the evening sunshine and then had supper outside. I love it when it's like this at St. André.

On Sunday we managed a lie-in until 08h30 and even then Agnès was not up so I went over to the baker. Lucky I did as he was down to the last chocolate croissant and some brioche. Agnès emerged around 09h30 and after breakfast outside we put on our walking shoes and walked into the forest. We took a route we don't think we have taken before.

When we got back we chilled out in the garden and had lunch before heading home at 15h00. I could stay forever when we have weekends like this. We'll be back in 3 weekends time.

When were driving through Cluny we saw that there was a fire in one of the stables right behind where the Pony Games were taking place. There were at least 5 fire engines and a lot of smoke and the large stable roof seemed to have gone. When I got home I saw that there was a report already in the paper it seems as though some children accidentally started in and since he had a load of straw in the fire spread rapidly and basically 700m2 of building is gone. Luckily no person or horse were injured.
